Tips for this spot
- Offshore wind carries you away from land. Do not ride it without a rescue boat.
- When a storm is coming, get out of the water and land the kite at once. Gusts before a storm are violent and a kite overhead is the highest point around.
- New spot: ask locals about shallows, currents and where people launch.

What you need to know
Watch out for
- High tide increases launch and landing hazards - the beach disappears, watch out for rocks, logs, bushes, and the nearby rock jetty.community map
- Beware of onshore wind.community map
Where to launch
- Inside of the bay in the SE part of the Ocean Shores peninsula (long sandy beach at mid to low tide) or the south shore for waves.community map
Parking
- Parking lot at the end of a short turnoff from Discovery Ave SE, with a restroom by the lot for changing out of the wind.community map
Getting there
- About a 2.5 h drive from Seattle (I-5 S -> Exit 104 Hwy 101 N -> Hwy 8 W -> Hwy 12 W -> Aberdeen Hwy 101 N -> Hwy 109 -> Hwy 115 / Damon Rd -> Point Brown Ave -> Discovery Ave SE).community map
- An easy footpath leads from the campsite to the launch areas; the south shore of the peninsula can be reached on foot.community map
Rules and respect
- Campground restrooms and showers are not public (they belong to owner Tom's private camp). Rinse off sand with the outdoor hose by the office before entering, introduce yourself, be polite, and drop a few dollars in the donation box.community map
Conditions
- Great for winter kiting; long sandy beach at mid to low tide, mostly smooth wind and fairly flat water, with waves on the south shore in S wind.community map
- Blows mainly early in the morning and drops in the early afternoon, though occasionally it blows all day.community map
Riders' tips
- If the Tatoosh Is and Columbia River Bar sensors on iKitesurf read E around 15-19 knots (8–10 m/s) or more and Hoquiam reads E around 11-13, Damon Point will likely be over 20 mph.community map
Facilities
- On-site private campground with a boat ramp, RV hookups (not suitable for tents), and toilets with showers (by arrangement with the owner, Tom).community map
- Restroom by the parking lot for changing out of the wind.community map
In riders' own words
- „Great for winter kiting on NE, E and ESE winds on the inside of the bay... Walk over to the south shore of the peninsula for kiting some waves on southerly winds“
- „Best wind direction: NE, E, ESE“
- „If the wind turns too southerly it gets holey and gusty on the inside.“
- „Skill level: Beginner... (Waves aren’t for beginners though.)“
- „Great for winter kiting on NE, E and ESE winds on the inside of the bay at the southeast part of the Ocean Shores peninsula.“
- „All-n-all it’s a fun place with a bathroom at the parking lot to change out of the wind.“
- „The campground right there has a boat launch and easy walk to the kite launch areas.“
- „Driving Directions from Seattle (Approximate driving time: 2.5 hours)“
- „It’s a beginner friendly spot on mid to low tide with long sandy beach though be careful with on-shore winds.“
- „High tide increases launching/landing hazards: due to no beach watch for rocks, logs, bushes & proximity of the rock jetty.“
- „The bathroom with showers at the site is NOT a public restroom. It is for the private campground and is maintained by the owner.“
- „Most of the time it’s a smooth wind and fairly flat water kiting.“
- „It blows primarily early in the morning and dies off early afternoon though on occasion it’s windy all day long.“
- „If Tatoosh Is and Columbia River Bar sensors on iKitesurf show easterly in high teens or better and Hoquiam sensor registers east in low teens you are likely to“
