Forecast and webcams

Before you go

Forecasts often disagree. When Windguru, ALADIN and Windy agree, it is worth going.

Tips for this spot

  • Offshore wind carries you away from land. Do not ride it without a rescue boat.
  • When a storm is coming, get out of the water and land the kite at once. Gusts before a storm are violent and a kite overhead is the highest point around.
  • New spot: ask locals about shallows, currents and where people launch.

What you need to know

Who it suits
Advanced and expert riders.
Size of the area
At tides above 8 ft, the beach is very small, with less space on the beach and for parking.

Watch out for

  • Lots of driftwood and logs on the beach (onshore conditions right in front of the parking lot) and at the launch.community map
  • Incoming tide at the launch pulls strongly into the lagoon and makes staying upwind difficult.community map
  • Limited safe exit from the water at high tide due to lack of beach and logs.community map
  • Gusty wind in the western part of the lagoon due to wind shadow from houses.community map
  • Submerged logs and timber in the lagoon.community map

Where to launch

  • Launch on the driftwood-strewn sandy spit by Deer Lagoon, an 800-yard walk down the beach from the access point.community map

Parking

  • Parking on the W side of the short sandy access road (or opposite, within the width of the driveway only). Limited capacity.capacity: limited · community map

Getting there

  • Short sandy public access road between private properties, then an 800-yard walk down the beach to the launch.community map

Rules and respect

  • No launching on private property in front of the houses by the access road (private beach down to the mean high tide line).community map
  • Respect private property and park legally; neighbors call the sheriff over illegal roadside parking.community map

Conditions

  • Water ranges from chop and small waves by the west point to flat water in Deer Lagoon and nice waves on the outside.community map
  • At high tide, Deer Lagoon is rideable for unhooked tricks; at low tide, more beach is exposed than at DB Park.community map
  • Slightly better wind on SW than at Double Bluff Park.community map

Riders' tips

  • If the beach or parking lot is full, use the adjacent Double Bluff Park.community map
  • Some local windsurfers dislike kiters.community map
In riders' own words
  • „Best wind direction: SW, S, SE“
  • „Skill level: Advanced/Expert Launch“
  • „The beach is very small at tides over 8 feet.“
  • „The launch is an 800 yard walk down the beach to the sandy and log strewn point adjacent to deer lagoon.“
  • „Park to the west side of the access lane and be efficient. There is limited parking and the opposite side of the street can be used“
  • „This is a short sandy road public access between private property.“
  • „There is lots of wood on the beach, so be very careful as this is an onshore condition in front of the parking.“
  • „If you go in the lagoon, make sure you look for submerged logs or wood“
  • „Once off the beach, there is limited safe exit at high tides because of lack of beach and logs.“
  • „The incoming tide makes it very difficult to stay upwind at the launch and you can get swept into the lagoon.“
  • „It can get pretty gusty in the lagoon towards the west end because of the houses blocking the wind.“
  • „There is no allowed launching on private property which means in front of the houses at the parking access.“
  • „The neighbors have recently made the Sheriff aware of people parking illegally on the road.“
  • „Varies from chop to small waves over towards the west point to flat water in the lagoon.“

When it blows

Average wind speed 10 m above ground from NASA POWER (MERRA-2, 2001–2025). The model works on a grid of roughly 50 km; on hills and by the water the wind is often stronger and gustier.
