Kitesurfing price: how much lessons, gear and travel cost

You pay for lessons first, the gear can wait. Here are real prices for lessons, a new and a used setup and getting to the wind, checked in October 2026.

Kitesurfing price at the start: lessons, gear and getting to the wind. At Big Day, the school I work with in Czechia, 6 hours of lessons come to about €310 and each extra 2-hour lesson adds about €103. A new setup with 1 kite is roughly €4,000 to €5,100. A week on a Red Sea kite safari with the beginner course is €1,850, plus flights and fees.

You don't have to pay for it all at once. Lessons come first, then rented gear for a while, and you buy your own once you know where and in what wind you'll be riding. The prices below come from schools, shops and manufacturers as of 17 October 2026, and they move during the year.

How much do kitesurfing lessons cost?

Lessons are the last thing I'd save on. IKO, the international organisation that certifies kite instructors, says learning to kitesurf takes roughly 6 to 12 hours of lessons, and adds that you should take that with a grain of salt: it often takes more than 12 hours and rarely less than 6. It depends on the wind, the spot, your instructor and how quickly the kite starts to make sense in your hands.

What lessons cost in different places

  • In the US, the instructor in the video below put lessons at about 100 to 120 USD an hour in his 2023 video, so 600 to 1,200 USD to get you riding. Check current prices with the school you pick.
  • In Czechia, I work with Big Day, Honza Procházka's kite shop and school. A lesson there is 2,500 CZK (about €103) for 2 hours of hands-on tuition, gear included, with 1 or 2 students per instructor. For 6 to 12 hours that's 3 to 6 lessons, or about €310 to €620, and each extra lesson adds about €103.
  • On the Red Sea kite safari I go on, the 6-day intensive beginner course is €600 with gear included. It's an add-on to the €1,250 week on the yacht, though. A private lesson is €65 an hour, and if you've done a course before and need to get back into it, a 3-hour refresher is €180.

At home you book lessons around the forecast, so a course usually stretches over several weekends. The wind is free, it just has a habit of taking the weekend off exactly when you have time. By the sea you learn in a single block, with steadier wind and shallow water where you can stand up after a fall and walk back to your board.

Where cheap lessons cost you more

A lot of short courses teach you to launch the kite and get going a bit, and that's it. Then you turn up at a real spot, you don't know where the wind is coming from or what to do when something goes wrong, and you're a danger to yourself and to everyone else on the water. Sadly that does happen.

A good course also teaches you:

  • the quick release, the safety release on the bar: pull it and the kite drops and loses its power,
  • self rescue, how to get yourself and the kite back to shore when you can't ride any more,
  • reading the wind and the spot: where it's blowing from, where you're allowed to launch, where the obstacles are,
  • choosing gear, so you don't buy blind afterwards.

I cover what to look for in a school in how to choose a kite school, and the whole path from first lesson to riding on your own is in how to learn kitesurfing.

How much does kitesurfing gear cost?

A setup for the water is a kite, a bar, a board with pads and straps, a harness with a spreader bar, a wetsuit and a pump. The bar is the control bar with the lines, and the quick release sits on it. The harness goes around your hips (or a seat harness around your hips and thighs) and has a hook you clip into, so the pull of the kite goes through your body and your hands just steer. Your first board will be a twin tip, a symmetrical board you can ride in both directions without turning it around.

New gear prices as of 17 October 2026. Check what's in the box: the Harlem Launch twin tip comes with fins only, without pads and straps, and the Majestic harness comes without a spreader bar. You buy both separately.

Item Example Price
Inflatable kite Harlem Thrive, 5 to 17 m² €1,784 to €2,624
Bar Harlem Lead Bar €684
Twin tip Harlem Launch €644
Pads and straps Harlem Sneaker €224
Harness Mystic Majestic 2026 €399.99
Spreader bar Mystic Ace Bar Kite €99.99
Wetsuit C-Skins, summer shorty to 4/3 mm about €95 to €370
Pump Harlem Pump XL €59
Total with 1 kite roughly €4,000 to €5,100

The biggest difference is kite size. The biggest light-wind kite costs about €840 more than the smallest, and 1 kite won't cover every wind. If you ride regularly, you'll end up buying a 2nd size.

You can save on new gear with timing. At the end of the season shops discount last year's models to make room for the new ones, and the difference between years is often mostly the colour and small tweaks.

Used kite gear: how much you save and what to check

Used gear usually goes for about half the price of new, so a 1-kite setup can be found for roughly €2,000 to €2,550. Some people buy everything before they know whether they like kiting and then sell it almost unused.

I'd save on the board and the wetsuit. You'll grow out of your first board anyway, and a wetsuit mostly just has to keep you warm. I'd never cut corners on the bar:

  • the quick release has to open as soon as you pull it, so try it out on land,
  • the bar has to match the kite you're buying, because systems from different brands aren't always compatible,
  • ask for the kite to be pumped up and left standing for a while, so you can see it holds air, and look at repairs and at the canopy against the light.

Rent or buy straight after your course?

I wouldn't buy my own gear straight after a course. You don't know yet whether you'll mostly ride at home or by the sea, or which kite size you'll use most. Big Day has a Try & Buy option, so you can test gear before you buy it, and by the sea you can rent for a week. On the safari a full set of gear costs €300 for 6 days and a twin tip alone €60.

For your first sessions on your own, pick a spot where someone can help you launch and land the kite. Launching and landing are the moments beginners are most wary of after a course. When renting makes sense and when it's worth bringing your own is covered in rent or bring your own kite gear?

How much does it cost to travel for wind?

At home you mainly pay for getting to the spot, and you ride when it blows. For the sea you fly, and either bring your gear or rent it there.

Flying with your own gear

A kite bag goes as sports equipment, and every airline has its own rules and prices. Smartwings, for example, charges €90 per piece per direction for sports equipment up to 32 kg, and you have to pre-register it at least 48 hours before departure. If your flight is part of a package holiday, you book it through the tour operator at their price, and the airline can refuse it for capacity reasons. With Smartwings that's €180 there and back, so always compare it with the rental price at your destination.

Kite safari in Egypt

On the kite safari in Egypt a week on the yacht costs €1,250 per person in a twin cabin. Meals, drinks, transfers, the rescue boat and the beach boys are included. Beach boys are the crew who carry and pump up your gear and help you launch and land. As a beginner you add the €600 course, gear included.

On top of that, budget for your flight to Hurghada, the visa, travel insurance that covers kiting, and the marine park fee plus the crew tip. That's €100 to €150, and Mohamed confirms the exact amount with the dates.

You can learn on a safari: the course runs in shallow lagoons, with an instructor and a rescue boat on the water. Just go in knowing it's a week on a boat with an intensive course. How much you manage in that week depends on the wind, the instructor and you, and 1 course doesn't necessarily make you an independent rider. The full breakdown of what's included and what you pay on top is in how much a kite safari costs.

Find out if you like it 1 lesson of 2 hours, gear included (Big Day) 2,500 CZK (about €103)
Learn to ride at home lessons at Big Day in Czechia, 6 to 12 hours according to IKO, often more about €310 for 6 hours, €620 for 12 hours, about €103 for each extra lesson
Learn to ride on a safari a week on the boat, the course, park fee and crew tip €1,950 to €2,000 plus flights, visa, insurance
Your own setup with 1 kite new or used €4,000 to €5,100 new, about half used

The order I'd recommend: lessons first, then a few weeks or 1 trip to the sea on rented gear, and your own setup once you know where and in what wind you'll ride most.
